BELIZE - LAMANAI MAYA RUINS

Lamanai is Mayan for "Submerged Crocodile". We saw these ancient Maya ruins after a walk under the jungle canopy along the New River lagoon. Lamanai is the second largest Mayan Site in Belize. It was first occupied from 1500BC up until the nineteenth century, making it the longest know occupation of the Mayan era.

We climbed this side of the 125ft Mayan High Temple above the jungle canopy for a spectacular view of the surrounding jungle and lagoon.

This is Marilyn Buie from Ontario Canada nearing the last stage of the climb. There was a convenient thick rope to help climb the steep steps.

Once we reached the top we could see the dense jungle forest and the New River flowing beside it.

Notice the large cohun palms emerging from the jungle canopy.
Here is our friend Terry Brewer - one of the Datastormers - taking the jungle view.

There below are the folks that passed on the pyramid climb today.

Here is a group shot for those that reached the top.

After climbing down from the High Temple we reached this fantastic mask of a Maya king.

This temple has a mask of a Jaguar at the lower left corner.
